The objective of this programme is to help Bible Societies in our neighbouring countries, Botswana, Lesotho, Namibia and Swaziland, with their task of making Bibles available.

Background

The Bible Societies in our neighbouring countries are suffering. Local fundraising in most of these countries is still in its infancy. They receive some help through the structures of the United Bible Societies (UBS) but it is far from enough. Bible sales help them to survive to a degree.

Organised Bible work in Botswana, Lesotho, Namibia and Swaziland was initiated by the Bible Society of South Africa (BSSA). For a long time these Bible Societies functioned as part of the BSSA. Since 1987 however, they have functioned as autonomous Bible Societies within the structure of the UBS.

The ties between these countries and the BSSA are further strengthened by the fact that some of our languages are also spoken in these countries, for example Afrikaans in Namibia, Sesotho in Lesotho, Setswana in Botswana and Siswati in Swaziland. Bibles in these cross-border languages are, where possible, supplied to the Bible Societies in our neighbouring countries at very special prices.

Thanks to this project, it was possible for the BSSA to make 23 751 Bibles available to our neighbouring countries at a discounted price in 2012.

By making these Bibles available to the Bible Societies in our neighbouring countries as cost effectively as possible, they are able to make affordable Bibles available to the residents of their countries. In this way, we help them to fulfil their task.
