A Bible for Wihan

Wihan du Toit, a six-year-old blind boy from Middelburg, was overjoyed to receive his own Bible in braille recently.

Wihan was born with retinal problems and lost his sight completely at the age of two. He adapted quickly to his blindness and is currently in a local nursery school. Wihan still had one wish however – to be able to read his own Bible like his brother.

His mother Charmaine began to research where she could get a Bible for him. Her search finally paid off when she made contact with Martie de Jager who is involved with the Bible Society and its work. Charmaine had eventually knocked on the right door and soon Wihan was the proud owner of his own Bible.

“Wihan loves his Bible so much and he’s already memorised Psalm 23. He would always take his brother’s Children’s Bible and pretend to read it. Now he can read his own! We just have to work hard to get the hang of the braille so he can understand the words which glide under his fingertips,” says Charmaine.

To make a complete Braille Bible available is an expensive process. The cost of producing the 46 parts of the Afrikaans Braille Bible is R3 110,52 but the Bible Society makes them available to blind people for the price of a standard Bible – R46.
