The purpose of the Bibles for Prisoners project is to supply free Bibles to the Department of Correctional Services for Bibles for prisonersdistribution among prisoners.

Background

According to statistics, there were some 162 162 prisoners in South African prisons in 2011. Of these, 49 695 were awaiting trial and 112 467 were currently serving out their sentences. South African prisons are overpopulated by 137%.

It is further remarkable that most South African prisoners are serving a sentence as a result of some or other violent crime (more than 84 000 of those already imprisoned or awaiting trial). A further 24 960 are imprisoned for sexual crime.  

Because the message of the Bible has the power to change lives, the Bible Society annually allocates an amount to make free Bibles available to the Department of Correctional Services for distribution among prisoners. The Directorate Spiritual Care manages the distribution of these Bibles which become the property of the prisoners.

Thanks to the Bibles for Prisoners project, 16 411 prisoners received a Bible of their own last year.

Expected impact

  • The Bible will bring comfort and hope to people who are imprisoned.
  • The Bible can contribute to the rehabilitation process and encourage prisoners to lead a crime-free life when they have completed their sentences.

Budget

For 2012, some R700 000 is needed to make Bibles available to prisoners.
