bibles for the poor

The purpose of this project, Bibles for the poor, is to make free Bibles available in a responsible manner to those Bibles for the poorwho cannot otherwise afford one.

Background

Thanks to Bible Society donors who support this project, 28 621 people who otherwise would not have been able to afford it, received a Bible of their own in 2012.

The children of the Trust Feed School in Wartburg in KwaZulu-Natal and the Olympia School for children with learning disabilities in Springs, as well as the young people of a poor community in Pearston in the Eastern Cape are just a few of the communities throughout South Africa which benefited from this project. This project also helped to provide Bibles for farm workers in the Western, Eastern and Northern Cape and for the residents of a home for people with severe epilepsy who cannot afford Bibles of their own.

For any number of reasons, poverty in South Africa reaches alarming proportions. About 50% of the South African population can be described as poor, and according to a recent study by the Children's Institute at the University of Cape Town, about 60% of South African children live in poverty. This means that they live in household with an income of less than R575 per person a month. According to this research, 26% of children in the poorest 20% of households go to bed hungry, while 37% of them live in places not suitable for human habitation.

The Bible Society of South Africa’s Bibles for the Poor project aims to make the Bible, which offers hope to everyone, available for those who can only dream of a Bible of their own.

A strategy is in place to ensure that free Bibles can be distributed in a responsible manner among the poorest of the poor.

Expected impact

  • The Bible will be placed in the hands of people who desperately need it, but cannot afford it.
  • The power of the Living Word will in this way bring hope and comfort to people who sometimes feel they are ostracised from society.

Budget

R700 000 is needed especially for this project in 2013.
