Home faith comes by hearing

faith comes by hearing

The primary objective of the Faith Comes By Hearing is to encourage people to listen to the Bible in listening groups. Faith Comes By Hearing programmeThe Bible is made available in audio format to millions of South Africans who research has shown are not functionally literate and for whom the Bible is a closed book. Many people who lead such busy lives that they do not have time to read, as well as those who do not read for other reasons, can also benefit from this programme.

Background

The task of the Bible Society is to make the Word accessible to everyone and for this reason we have established, in co-operation with an American organisation Hosanna, the Faith Comes By Hearing programme in South Africa. Listening groups receive a device called the Proclaimer which resembles a cassette player and contains a microchip which is loaded with the dramatised recording of the New Testament.

The New Testament in this format is available in ten of South Africa's 11 official languages. Southern Ndebele is the only one missing. The English, Portuguese and French recordings are also used in South Africa. More than 1 500 listening groups were established across the country in 2011 and thousands of people could, thanks to this programme, listen to the Bible.

Marie Motshabi says: "We might be poor and illiterate in the eyes of the world because we don't have many earthly possessions, but spiritually we are richly blessed. Thanks to the Proclaimer we can now hear the Word for ourselves and we don't have to wait for someone to read it to us."

Amelia Chauke says: "The Proclaimer changed my life. When I heard what Saul did to the Christians and that God forgave him, I realised that God can forgive all my sins too. Praise God!"

Expected Impact

  • Through the listening groups people have the opportunity to interact with the Word of God and this may lead to spiritual growth.
  • People who are illiterate will be able to listen to the Bible in a safe environment.
  • This programme can make a positive contribution to the moral upliftment of our society.

Budget

The year the Bible Society needs R2 087 476 to ensure than people in our country can benefit from the Faith Comes By Hearing programme.
