The purpose of this project is to use the Bible through Scripture programmes to address human needs and so
increase interaction with the Word.
Background
The Bible Society is currently focussing on two programmes – the development of Bible Selections which will address human needs, and of literacy material based on the Bible.
People often find themselves in circumstances where they need more than just physical help. Poverty, HIV/Aids, xenophobia, depression, unemployment and natural disasters are just a few examples of when people need the faith, hope and love the Bible offers. People need to know that God cares for them in their specific circumstances.
To address this need, Bible Portions and Bible Selections on various topics are prepared and made available.
Millions of South Africans are illiterate. For them the Bible is a closed book. Literacy material based on the Bible is being developed and the first book, My Bible Do and Learn Book, will soon be made available in English for use by people who teach others to read. The book is suitabel for use in basic education for all age groups, from pre-primary school children to adults. The visual association method of learning is used.
Expected impact
- People who find themselves in specific crisis circumstances will be comforted and encouraged through the Bible message.
- People can be assisted in learning to read.
- Interaction with the Bible will be increased through this.
Budget
R500 000 is needed to continue expanding and establishing this programme during the year.
