The purpose of this project is to make the first complete Bible ever available to Southern Ndebele speakers in
their mother tongue at an exceedingly affordable price.
Background
Southern Ndebele is one of South Africa's 11 official languages. The majority of over 712 000 South Africans who speak this language live in Mpumalanga, Limpopo and Gauteng.
Southern Ndebele is the only official language in South Africa in which a complete Bible is not yet available. Christians who speak this language use mainly the Zulu Bible out of necessity.
Over the past 11 years, the translation of the Old Testament and a revision of the New Testament which was first published in 1986 has been taking place at the request of the Southern Ndebele-speaking churches. The translation work is complete and the pre-publishing processes (layout, proofreading, etc) are underway, after which the Bible will be printed.
Tswana speakers, for examples, have had the Bible in their language since 1857, Zulu speakers since 1883 and Afrikaans speakers since 1933. Southern Ndebele speakers still do not have this privilege.
The Bible Society plans to publish this Bible before Christmas 2012. Because this language group has waited so long for the Bible in their language, it was decided to make the first edition available at a very special price so that as many Southern Ndebele speakers as possible can obtain a Bible of their own.
Expected impact
- Many Southern Ndebele speakers will have their own Bible in their own language for the first time.
- Through this Bible they will have the opportunity to better understand the biblical message of the Bible and this will lead to Church growth.
- This translation will also contribute to the development of the Southern Ndebele language.
Budget
R250 000 is needed to make 10 000 Bibles available at approximately half the normal price.
