At the height of the lockdown, when all South
Africans were confined to their homes, the
Tshwane City Council sought to give those
living on the street a safe haven.
Hundreds of people living on the street,
many of them drug addicts, were tested for
Covid-19 and given a warm bed in a tem
porary shelter. One such shelter was located
at the Lyttleton Sports Ground in the eastern
part of Pretoria. Here some 400 young men
were confined in the city’s effort to prevent the
spread of the pandemic among the homeless.
Civilian volunteers and the army were asked
to help with feeding the groups.
Being a chaplain in the South African Army
Engineer Formation, Rev Charl de Kock, who
is also an Organising Secretary of the Bible
Society, was involved in the operation.
“Many of these young men are addicted to
the drug nyaope and have been chased away
from their homes because of their drug prob-
lem. They literally are lost sons. That is when
I realised here is an opportunity to distribute
Scripture,” he said.
During one of his visits where he prayed for
and encouraged the group, he also organised
the distribution of 220 Gospel of John booklets.
“One can only pray that these Gospels will
help some of them to have a better life,” he
said.
